Porridge Power!

Porridge is a dish/drink made by boiling ground, crushed, or chopped starchy plants which are mostly grains, in water or milk.

Most of us have had porridge at some stage in our lives. Here in Kenya it’s associated with children, the sick or heavy commercial workers. Porridge is beneficial to our health regardless of age!

Porridge helps reduce the risk of heart diseases , especially oat porridge. It is also a great source of nutritious body vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants. If you don’t have oat meal, millet or  run out of sorghum “Unga ya wimbi” you should not worry because you can make porridge from maize meal.

Nowadays, people are adventurous eaters who want creativity in their porridge making it versatile. It can be blended into various flavours and texture.


The following is a recipe on how to make yourself a warming bowl of maize meal porridge in only 10-15 minutes:

1.) Boil 350ml water and a pinch of salt in a pot (preferably a non-stick pan)

2.) Mix 50g maize meal with cold water.

3.) Stir the mixture into the boiling water.

4.) Simmer for at least 30 minutes with the lid on.

5.) Add a dollop of butter.

Serve with milk and sugar or honey.
